The company derives its name from Fred Hargesheimer an American pilot who was shot down in World War II and rescued by local people in 1943 www.vipclubmn.org/Documents/Fred_Hargesheimer.pdf . Fred later returned and established the Airmens Memorial Foundation which has built schools at Ewasse and Noau. Hargy Oil Palms Ltd continues to assist the foundation in its work.

SA Sipef NV www.sipef.be has owned 100% of Hargy Oil Palms Ltd since 2004. Sipef was established in Antwerp Belgium in 1919 and has plantation interests in West Africa (oil palm), Indonesia (oil palm, rubber and tea) and Papua New Guinea (oil palm and rubber). Sipef is listed on the European Stock Exchange in Brussels.

Hargy Oil Palms Ltd was established as a result of a decision by the then colonial administration to diversify the country’s agricultural export base by introducing oil palm. The land along the north coast of West New Britain was recognised as having a high potential for oil palm with fertile volcanic ash soils and high rainfall. The project is a nucleus estate project with smallholders providing up to 50% of the crop. In 2009 there were 3,162 smallholders with 13,200ha planted. The smallholders produced 200,123 tonnes of fruit in 2009 earning over K33 million for the smallholder families. Over 17% of this income was paid directly to women through the loose fruit mama scheme whereby women collect loose fruit and sell directly to the company.

Hargy Oil Palms Limited (HOPL) was incorporated in 1969 as a joint venture between the PNG Government and Shin Asahigawa Pty Ltd. In 1973 the Government terminated the joint venture agreement with Shin Asahigawa and invited interested plantation management companies to participate in the joint venture. The Belgium Company S A Sipef NV, a professional international management company with considerable experience in the running of large oil palm projects throughout the world, was successful. Sipef was issued with 25% of the shareholding initially and in 1976 the shareholding increased to 50% with the PNG Government retaining 50% equity in the project.

In 2004 the PNG Government sold its 50% shareholding to S.A SIPEF NV which has always had full responsibility for the management, operations, processing and international marketing of the company’s products.

Since 1973 Hargy has developed over 9,500 hectares of Oil Palm Plantations and is in the process of developing a further 10,000 hectares. It has also assisted with the development of over 13,000 hectares of smallholder blocks and plantings owned and operated by citizens of Papua New Guinea. The Company has processing mills at Bialla and Navo to process oil from harvested fruit and palm kernel oil from the kernel inside the fruit. With the development that is ongoing, Hargy has become a major force within the Palm Oil Industry in PNG. The company has received approval to expand its plantations by a further 10,000 ha’s by 2015 and is in the process of constructing a third oil palm processing mill.

The prime reason behind the local investment is to contribute to the economy of the region by providing employment opportunities, boosting revenue, supporting social projects and promoting more local business participation. The Company has developed a core team of staff belonging to various facets of the business and is confident that this team can be developed to grow with the Company.
